AWE2013 : Speaking with Mindy Brooks about AR and education

Mindy BrooksWe are very please to meet Mindy Brooks, Director of Education and Research at Sesame Workshop, who will speak about AR and education at AWE2013.

Mindy is responsible for the integration of educational content across digital media platforms and leading field research on all media platforms that present Sesame Street and The Electric Company. In her role, she is responsible for curriculum development as well as developing studies, coding systems, analyzing data, writing reports and summarizing findings that aid production teams in creating content. She received her Master’s in Educational Psychology from New York University. Prior to attending NYU, she held the position of Director of Education for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Oklahoma.

Hello Mindy, you will give a conference in AWE2013 about the uses of Augmented Reality for education. In your opinion, how AR will be included teaching methods?

We have found through our research that Augmented Reality can be used to teach educational content in innovative ways. Big Bird’s Words, for example, has enabled us to use technology to help children learn that there are words all around them in the real world and that these words have meaning.

How children interact with this technology?

We have conducted multiple rounds of formative research on our AR projects. We’ve found that children are highly engaged and mesmerized by it. It initially takes a few minutes for children to understand that the applications are interacting with the real world, but if designed appropriately, children are easily able to understand how to play.

In your opinion, what is the place of Augmented reality in our world in 2030?

We are excited to see how AR, and other technologies, continue to evolve over the next decade. The fast progression of development will only further our efforts to incorporate AR into educational interactive properties for children.

Many thanks Mindy, rendezvous june 5 for « AR for Education » !
