Ori Inbar and the laws of Augmented Reality Design

ori-inbarWe present you a new speaker of Augmented Reality Summit India 2013, Ori inbar CEO of well known CEO of augmentedreality.org, a global non-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing augmented reality (AR), co-founder and CEO of Ogmento and organizer of Augmented World Expo (AWE) – the world’s largest and most influential conference for AR ! A great pleasure for us !

You will give a conference in ARSI2013 about the power of Augmented Reality to add a real value to user experience. As for you, will AR be a mandatory way now to imagine human machine interaction?

My talk is titled: « The 3 laws of Augmented Reality Design – How to design Augmented Reality Application that add value and delight users. »

The talk is based on my experience in the last 6 years building AR applications and reviewing practically every AR app that was published in that time. I have seen many applications that have a wow factor that lasts for 2 minutes – but most applications are not used more than once. Designers and producers need to look at it in a very different way than traditional user experiences. It’s important to understand that AR is about digitizing our interacting with the physical world. It’s not a new form of Human Machine Interaction (HMI). It should be thought of as Human-World-Interaction, which requires a new thinking, new rules, and new experiences.

I believe that in the next few years we’ll see AR becoming an integral part of any aspect of our work and life. And it will completely change the way we interact with people, places and things. Of course traditional approaches (PCs, mobile touch) will still be best for certain things – and AR shouldn’t be forced for things that it’s not intended for – but it’ll create new categories of things that we can’t even imagine. AR has the power to enable us to do things and feel things we couldn’t otherwise. It can help us learn, and master skills instantly.

About the AR Market, do you think is a « worldwide concept » or some local areas are more receptive like Asia ?

Augmented Reality is obviously a worldwide concept. It is capturing the imagination of people all over the world, and is currently being used by enterprises and consumers everywhere. Although some may be more advanced in their use than others, eventually we will all use it to have a better life. Augmented Reality has the power to advance humanity.

Now, we focus on Augmentedreality.org and specially on your goal “Inspire 1 Billion active users of augmented reality – before the end of the decade – that is 2020”. We completely agree with this goal but, in your mind, what are major difficulties?

We believe the goal of 1 billion active users of AR by 2020 is very attainable. If you extrapolate from the growth of mobile media usage (which is using the same platform), it’s easy to see how we’ll reach this number by the end of the decade. In other words – it’s inevitable. Nevertheless, there are certain things that we, as the AR community, need to do to help accelerate the growth and avoid disappointment by the public (such as VR experienced in the 90s – but now billions are using it – yet calling it different names). My primary concern is DESIGN. Mobile platform and software algorithms have matured to a point where they are technically good enough for many AR experiences. Sure, they’ll get better and better, with Moore’s law, glasses, and advanced computer vision techniques. But all the ingredients are already here. As I mentioned above in relation to my talk – designers need to get into the picture; they need to understand the new medium and design valuable applications that users will want to use many times (hence the reason we are shooting for « active users »). Instead of flooding the app stores with gimmicky AR applications which create a bad impression about the power of AR, producers and designers need to focus on applications that significantly enhance an experience. AR has the potential to enable us to do things that were not possible before; it empowers humans to experience the world in a more advanced, engaging, and productive way.
